ABOUT ME
Hi, my name is Char, and I have got an Diploma in Level 2 Photography and an Extended Diploma in Level 3 Photography, and I'm currently working towards a Degree in Photography.
My favourite photography to do myself is Youth Culture in Black and White, because I feel like this best describes how I feel. My work has always been very personal and sensitive to me, whether that is documenting my social life, taking photos in the studio, or taking photos on a roll of film. With my Black and White photos, I like to experiment with contrast, highlights and shadows, whites and blacks, cropping, grain, and angles. This is an attempt to try and discover different ways to share how I feel about the world around me.
My biggest inspirations have been Olivia Bee, Corinne Day, and Nan Goldin. Olivia Bee was the first photographer I took a liking to and researched a lot of. I researched her book 'Kids In Love' because of it's bittersweet and soft colours. I then moved on to being very inspired by Corinne Day for her fashion shoots, and gritty and raw youth culture images. My most recent inspiration and influence was Nan Goldin, mainly for how she documented extremely authentic moments in her life. For example her toxic relationships, her social life, and her self portraiture.
In my youth culture work, I experiment with a little bit of self portraiture myself, by having my friends also photograph and document moments from their eyes, causing me to be in some of the photos. At first, I was always against this because I didn't like the idea of me being in photos, but it eventually gave my work a new perspective. It showed that I'm not just taking photos of what's happening around me, Im showing that I am a part of this life and what's going on.
In my spare time, I like to do videos on the side, as my dream is to make award winning films one day. My video work is similar to my photos, though they do lean more towards colourful and happy aesthetics, yet I still like them to be authentic to me and who I am. I also like to draw and sketch in my spare time, as this gives me a chance to learn about adding detail rather than removing detail, like you do with photography. It also gives me a way to express the things I focus on in my mind and create ways for people to understand me.
Art, whether it's been in photography, cinematography, or drawing, has always been a big part of who I am and something I'm never going to go away from. It has helped me understand tough and scary times in my life.
